Out & About …

… on the North York Moors, or wherever I happen to be.

OMM Campsite Cockley Beck

I didn’t post yesterday. For several reasons, not least because I had spent the day high on the Central Fells in horizontal rain, 60 mph winds and zero visibility, it just wasn’t the right day for taking photos. I did get the camera out once but the lens had a film of water on it. I put it away. Good job it’s waterproof. I have been taking part in the OMM, a two-day mountain race for pairs in which competitors have to carry camping gear and food for 36 hours. The overnight camp was at Cockley Beck in the Duddon valley which was another reason I didn’t post: the mobile reception was zilch.

It has been 13 years since I was last at an OMM camp. Some things don’t change, the mud, where a dry level pitch is at a premium. The toilets are now rows of portable loos, the slit trenches not appropriate in this day and age, and with two thousand competitors. The rain continued until the early hours. We woke up to a dawn of clearing skies with the fell tops silhouetted about.
