Dùn Sgùrabhal stands on a low hill, facing the sea to the west and the expanse of Tràigh Eais to the south. What remains is a collapsed stone structure, but it is still recognisable. Among the rubble, archaeologists have identified a double wall with a gallery between—clear signs of Iron Age construction. Though it has never been excavated, the presence of a scarcement ledge suggests it once had at least two floors. Whether it was a broch or something else remains unknown1Broch (Iron Age)(Possible), Dun (Prehistoric). Barra, Eoligarry, Dun Scurrival. Canmore ID 9705. http://canmore.org.uk/site/9705.
Iron Age pottery has been found here, confirming the date. A polished stone axe from the Neolithic period also turned up, which may have been brought in much later or could hint that the Iron Age builders reused an older, Neolithic site.
Earlier accounts mention surrounding structures and an outer wall, implying that this may once have been an Iron Age village. Field systems and lazy beds nearby may date from the same period, though some could be later.

About 140 metres below the hill, to the south, lies a narrow cave called Uamh an Duin. It is about 16 metres long, three wide, and just under three high at the entrance. A human skull was reportedly found here half a century ago. Now, there is little to disturb but a mound of droppings and a flock of Rock Doves.
In front of the cave is a level stone platform. A small excavation in 1998 uncovered Iron Age pottery, a hearth, and a saddle quern. A few medieval potsherds were found in the upper layers, and some stone tools suggest even earlier use2Cave, Barra, Eoligarry, Uamh An Duin. Canmore ID 9707. http://canmore.org.uk/site/9707.
The cave overlooks the untouched sands of Tràigh Eais, but its ancient occupants were unlikely to have admired the view.
