Unmanaged Blaze on Hutton Moor

Experts love a crisis. Last year, the tiny heather beetle was going to end the world as we know it. They claimed the infestation had turned the moors into a massive tinderbox of kindling—they may well have been right. They were a bit over-excited. This year’s display may be a bit patchy, but the heather is far from dead. It has blossomed suddenly within the last week.

Hutton Moor is the untidy neighbour of the National Park. Birch saplings are growing in the heather. Usually, any tree that dares to sprout is given a thorough toasting to maximise the ground open for the red grouse. They call this rotational burning. The beetle infestation of 2025 could well have been a self-inflicted wound. It is an all-you-can-eat restaurant for the heather beetle. Every plant is the same.
