  • Taylorforce Gill

    Taylorforce Gill

In Borrowdale, the “wettest place in England”. Allegedly. Yesterday’s drizzle has fizzled out. But there’s still water coming out of Styhead Tarn. Styhead Gill tumbles down Taylor Force Gill, a 140-foot drop, one of the highest in the Lake District. Open Space Web-Map builder Code

  • Holme Ground, Low Tilberthwaite

    Holme Ground, Low Tilberthwaite

Drizzle and low cloud covering the tops, a welcome refreshing change. Tilberthwaite is a lovely little valley with mature woods hiding abandoned slate quarry workings and spoil tips. Open Space Web-Map builder Code

  • A very low Thirlmere

    A very low Thirlmere

Buzzed over by an RAF jet not quite copying the X-Wing fighter in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, it seemed weird seeing Thirlmere so low, the reservoir that supplies water to Manchester which will soon have a hosepipe ban. Normal demand on the reservoir is 40 million gallons per day, a figure which to me…

  • Lamb Jam on the Baysdale Road

Lamb Jam on the Baysdale Road

Gathering the sheep. We had just overtaken the farmer working his dog. Not sure why though. The ewes were already shorn. Open Space Web-Map builder Code

  • Hold my hand while we jump off this cliff

Hold my hand while we jump off this cliff

“Let’s jump off this cliff – it’ll be fun! A right laugh!” urged all the people (well, I mean just over half of those who had bothered to speak up at all). I peered down at the rocks; it was a long way to fall. I said, “This cliff’s more than three hundred feet high…

  • Green Bank and Busby Moor

    Green Bank and Busby Moor

Here comes the rain. It’s looking ominous. Finally some relief. Looking along the Cleveland Hills from the Raisdale Road. Roseberry is somewhere on the horizon. Open Space Web-Map builder Code

  • Cod Beck Reservoir

    Cod Beck Reservoir

Considering the weather maybe I shouldn’t have been surprised to see Cod Beck Reservoir so low but I’ve never seen it like this. I suspect Yorkshire Water have deliberately released some of the water, and quite recently, the shore was still soft with a nice aroma. Open Space Web-Map builder Code

  • Cottongrass, Hutton Moor

    Cottongrass, Hutton Moor

The cottongrass has been particularly good this year. Large swathes of the fluffy white cotton seedheads. Also known as bog cotton and ghost grass although not strictly a grass. It grows well on damp acidic moorland. The seeds and stems are supposed to be edible with its astringent properties used to treat diarrhoea. Wads of…

  • Farndale

    Farndale

A quiet and peaceful Farndale, on an overcast morning. If the 1960s plan to flood the dale by the building of a reservoir had come to fruition this scene would have looked totally different. The plan to provide a source of drinking water for the cities of Hull and Sheffield would have covered 400 acres,…

  • Huntcliff Foot, Saltburn

    Huntcliff Foot, Saltburn

Low tide and a late evening saunter along the shore below Huntcliff. Super lighting in the golden hour but the sunset fizzled out. Open Space Web-Map builder Code
