Hope springs eternal

Yesterday’s adventure took us up the stunning Ben Hope, seen here rising majestically across the serene Loch Hope. Our ascent was clear until the final 40 metres when we climbed into a thick duvet of cloud. This stifled any views but added a sense of drama to our climb. Despite the mist, the persistent song of a cuckoo could be heard, undampened by the weather.

The name Ben Hope hold a layer of history. In English, it evokes a sense of aspiration, yet its origins are deeply rooted in Viking heritage, meaning “the hill of the bay.” I am fascinated by this blend of cultures. I imagine those Viking sailors using the hill as a navigational aid. It adds a fascinating dimension to an already enchanting landscape.

Brings back some memories. The scenery in that north-west corner is fantastic much better than the Flow Country around Thurso and Wick. In 1988 I remember making a phone call home from the last A-B phone box in mainland Britain next to the farm at Eriboll (no mobiles back then). Also found out my wife was pregnant during the trip after picking up a test kit at the chemists in Lairg. The staff insisted we return to report the results which we duly did.
