Out & About …

… on the North York Moors, or wherever I happen to be.

Bransdale: a cacophony of gunshots — too close for comfort

A day spent volunteering with the National Trust in Bransdale, even though the landscape was somewhat elusive. During our journey over, we left a clear yet overcast Esk valley, climbing into a thick layer of cloud at Rosedale Head. This blanket of fog lingered persistently, keeping us smothered throughout the day.

But, in a fleeting break during the early-afternoon, the cloud layer briefly rose, allowing me to seize the opportunity to capture my one and only photograph of the day, of a recently planted woodland patch situated on the slope of Bloworth Slack. And then we were once again enveloped.

Bloworth Slack was positively teeming with activity. A party of shooters had ventured out, and the scene was rather unsettling. In an environment where visibility was limited to a mere 20 metres, the cacophony of beaters, dogs, and gunshots echoed from seemingly all directions. Despite assurances of our safety, the disconcerting feeling persisted, especially when one couldn’t make out the direction and distance of the commotion. We survived, but the pheasants were not so fortunate.
