Out & About …

… on the North York Moors, or wherever I happen to be.

An Dùn

Another section of the John o’Groats Trail completed. I’ve done a fair few now. This coastline north of Helmsdale really is superb .

And another ‘fort’; or is it? About the only evidence this promontory with a narrow sea arch under its neck is indeed a fort, is its name ‘An Dùn’, which means in the Gaelic ‘The Fort’. Canmore, the Scottish equivalent of English Heritage, said in 1911, apart from a small section of wall, “there are no traces of any other features of antiquity on this rock”. In the sixties, this ‘wall’ was reassessed and thought to be the natural rock strata.
