Out & About …

… on the North York Moors, or wherever I happen to be.

“South Gare Fishermen’s Association” huts

South Gare Fishermen’s Association

An early walk on the beach this morning at South Gare, almost deserted with the sun breaking through the clouds. A few telltale plumes of smoke from the fishermen’s huts give away their occupancy.

There have been recent assurances that the 101, 12ft square huts will not be demolished when the steelworks site is redeveloped. They provide an iconic scene. Viewers of the TV detective series ‘Vera’ will recognise it as Blyth.

They are lovingly tended, all painted the same dark green colour with solar panels, stoves, and furniture. A home from home, a place where the fishermen can tend their gear and, for some, escape their wives. Apparently, no women are allowed to stay overnight.

Back on the Moors, the clag was still down.
