Airy Holme

A view from Roseberry Topping to Capt. Cook’s Monument across the great bowl of Airy Holme, Slacks Wood and Ayton Bank, just before a tremendous downpour. The National Trust boundary of Roseberry is the fence line in the foreground just before the bracken limit. Aireyholme Lane can just be made out crossing left to right. One thing I noticed the other day while perusing the map is that the rough pasture land between the National Trust boundary and Aireyholme Lane is mostly Open Access Land although the only access is one farm gate from Aireyholme Lane. I say mostly because there is a small area, quadrant shaped, out of shot to the left that is not Open Access but the boundary is not defined physically. All very peculiar and I wonder what the history is behind it.
