Out & About …

… on the North York Moors, or wherever I happen to be.

Mount Famine ridge

A pre-breakfast run with the dog. And overnight someone had opened a massive parasol of cloud. The blue skies of yesterday had gone along with any view of Kinder Scout. Mount Famine was familiar to me only as a race in the fell runners calendar. Too short to justify the journey south and too close to the high plateau to bother with. But what a cracking little ridge, many ups and downs of Millstone Grit reaching a grand height of 473m overlooking the River Sett below. The name is intriguing, surmised to date from the times of the late 18th-century Enclosure Acts, when the stone walls were built in order to lease fields to tenant farmers. The enclosed hill was of such poor quality land that the farmer and his family often went hungry.
