Early October, Roseberry Common, and the gorse wears a coat of drizzle. Every branch holds a web, and every web holds hundreds of beads. I stopped walking. Roseberry could wait.
The likely architect is the common sheetweb spider, Linyphia triangularis1Wikipedia: Linyphia triangularis. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linyphia_triangularis [Accessed 6 October 2026]2BugBlog: Linyphiidae, sheet weavers and money spiders. http://abugblog.blogspot.com/2015/10/linyphiidae-sheet-weavers-and-money.html [Accessed 6 October 2026]. It belongs to the family that we call money spiders. Old belief says that a money spider found on your clothes means cash is on its way. A proverb first written down in 1867 adds that those who spare a spider will thrive3RTÉ Brainstorm: Does killing spiders bring bad luck? https://www.rte.ie/brainstorm/2022/0808/1312024-spiders-folklore-superstitions-ireland/ [Accessed 6 October 2026].
Of course, my identification is just a wild guess. Britain has 270 species of money spider, and most are tiny, dark and fit only for a microscope. The ones on this gorse will be among the giants of the family. They grow up to six millimetres, heavyweights in the way sparrows are heavyweights among crumbs. Nobody ever felt one of these land on a sleeve and thought of a pension.
Whatever luck the family carries has gone to the small ones, which nobody sees.
These spiders have a simpler life. Each hangs upside down beneath its web and wait for dinner to drop in. Less a bringer of fortune, more a landlord with patience.
The drizzle gave the game away. On a dry day those webs are far harder to spot, and I would have walked past with my ignorance intact.
A spider on your sleeve is a pleasant surprise. Anything near six millimetres, and the lottery ticket can stay on the shelf.
