A steep, sunny hillside covered in a thick, vibrant carpet of violet-blue native bluebells. Several leafy deciduous trees with early spring foliage are scattered across the slope. In the background, a distant view of a green rural valley stretches out under a clear blue sky with light clouds.

The Humble Bluebell and the Heavyweight Rift

The bluebells in Newton Wood seem a bit thin on the ground. The coverage of these flowers is not as full as in previous years. It is still early days though. In a fortnight they may well be more vibrant.

Some people like the flowers. Others might remember the Scottish group called The Bluebells. Their track “Young at Heart” caused an international stir again in 1993. A car advertisement pushed the song to number one. (I must admit I don’t recall it.) It was a mountain out of a molehill for the Vatican1Simpson, Dave. “‘The pope complained about the lyrics!’: the Bluebells and Siobhan Fahey on how they made Young at Heart.” The Guardian, 25 Aug. 2025, https://www.theguardian.com/music/2025/aug/25/the-bluebells-siobhan-fahey-young-at-heart-pope-divorce.

The Pope made a formal complaint. He said the lyrics promoted divorce. This was a bit of a pickle for the band. Siobhan Fahey thought the situation was very funny. The lyrics were not about legal separation. They were a reflection on her relationship with her parents. She and Bobby Bluebell were just “two kids” writing from the heart.

Now there is a bigger row. Donald Trump is at loggerheads with Pope Leo. He called the Pope “weak on crime” and shared a fake image of himself2Maqbool, Aleem. “Trump’s rift with Pope is playing out in public – it’s costing him valuable support.” BBC News, 15 Apr. 2026,[https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c070jxyjrmeo]. This rift is a real sticky wicket compared to a pop song. Loyal allies are jumping ship because of the war in Iran. It makes the 1993 row look like a storm in a teacup. Are we simply watching a battle of egos while the world burns?
