Out & About …

… on the North York Moors, or wherever I happen to be.

Faggergill, Near Whaw

A disturbing day yesterday. I was in Arkengarthdale helping the local authority assess the immediate needs and deliver food and supplies to the more vulnerable residents of the dale following the flooding last Tuesday night. Roads and tracks washed out prevented many, especially those living in the remote parts of the dale, from getting out. The cleanup and rebuilding of the infrastructure are underway but the trauma and shock will take many years to recover. It is perhaps unfortunate that the media spotlight over this traumatic flooding has been overtaken by the risk of the reservoir collapse at Whaley Bridge. The stoicism, community spirit and humanity I saw in the villages of Reeth, Langthwaite and Whaw will forever remain with me.
