Out & About …

… on the North York Moors, or wherever I happen to be.

Month: July 2016

  • Stone Arthur

    Stone Arthur

Back over in the Lakes again. The second time in a week in the Grasmere valley. A humid with threatening skies. But the rain held off and a break in the cloud allowed the sun to shine on Stone Arthur. With a prominence of just two metres it can hardly be called a summit. Just a  rocky knoll of breccia…

  • Ringlet Butterflies

    Ringlet Butterflies

I came across this amorous couple this morning on Roseberry Common. Butterflies are usually so flighty they’re difficult to photograph but so engrossed were these I could get within an inch with my little camera set on macro. They’re Ringlets apparently, quite common.

  • Bell Heather

    Bell Heather

One of three types of heather found in the UK, the others being Cross Leaved Heather and the very common Ling. Bell Heather, or Erica cinerea to give it its Latin name, flowers much earlier than Ling and a much richer colour. It favours drier conditions like cling to this sandstone crag in and old quarry on Great…

  • The Traveller's Rest

    The Traveller's Rest

While the north east basked in sunshine the Lakes were clouded in mist. By noon the 398m high Helm Crag was only just clear. According to Wainwright Helm Crag, or the Lion and the Lamb, is the only fell requires climbing skills to reach the summit. Below on the climb up to Dunmail Raise is the Traveller’s Rest,…

  • Ill Bell Ridge

    Ill Bell Ridge

On the west of the Kentmere valley. From Stony Cove Pike.

  • Grey Crag

    Grey Crag

A directissimo evening ascent out of Hartsop to Angle Tarn. Very steep but good views. Grey Crag is the ridge with Pasture Bottom to its right leading to Treshthwaite Mouth. Left is Hayeswater.

  • Bowston Weir

    Bowston Weir

A seemingly over engineering weir on the River Kent which drops 50m between Staverley and Kendal. Little used footpaths although the National Trail The Dales Way goes along the riverbank.

  • Lune Valley

    Lune Valley

On the Howgills. Blease Fell to be precise. Didn’t see a soul. Just the hum of the M6 down in the Lune Valley breaking the silence.

  • Sunshine and Grey Skies

    Sunshine and Grey Skies

An ugly scar across the heather moor of Carlton Moor, the yellow sandstone of the track accentuated by the threatening skies. The track is typical of estate roads all over the North York Moors providing easy access for the shooting parties. This track though was probably built by the glider station which used to operate on Carlton…

  • Tom's Bransdale Fell Race

    Tom's Bransdale Fell Race

A 12km running race dreamt up by Tom Watson, a surveyor for the National Trust, and in whose memory the race is now held and organised by his friends and colleagues. The race is largely off road and involves 400m of climbing. It starts from the Trust’s Bransdale Mill, a charming spot in a charming dale. The photo was taken…
