A panoramic view of a rural landscape from a hilltop. Fields of various crops, including wheat and grass, are visible. The sky is blue with some white clouds. In the foreground, there is a path lined with large black bags.

Bagged for Your Convenience

After a return from just a few days away in the Lakes, I was delighted to find that the National Trust, in their usual brilliance, had thoughtfully helicoptered in around 40 large bags up the main path of Roseberry1Out & About passim. Each one, of course, containing roughly a ton of aggregate to ensure they did not have the audacity to blow away in the wind. Ingenious, really. Visitors ascending the summit can now enjoy the convenience of discreetly depositing their discarded bottles into the thoughtfully placed bags, rather than being burdened with the tiresome task of hurling them into the bracken. A truly inspired improvement.

And, as an added benefit, these discarded treasures are now conveniently left at waist height, sparing the Roseberry volunteer litter collectors the tiresome task of having to bend down to pick them up. It really is quite remarkable how Roseberry Topping undergoes a dramatic transformation into a sort of refuse repository even after just a typical weekend.

Sarcasm is lost on these litter louts I’m afraid. I do sympathise fully with your frustration.
