    Cleveland Hills

The Cleveland Hills always look good after a few days away. I still get very irritated when I have to state Middlesbrough as my postal address followed by Cleveland. I can just about cope with a postcode beginning ‘TS…’ but I live in North Yorkshire, I pay my rates to North Yorkshire, not Middlesbrough. And…

  • Vale of Cleveland

    Vale of Cleveland

I haven’t been up to Capt. Cook’s Monument for a while. Blue skies with the bracken heavy from overnight rain. This view across the flat, fertile Vale of Cleveland is from an abandoned sandstone quarry on Easby Moor. In the distance are the Cleveland Hills; Turkey Nab is on the left. Beannachtaí na Féile Pádraig ort

St Patrick’s Day and a reminder needed that spring is on its way. The average date for the first swallow being spotted off the southern coast is 29th March. In the North-East, it will probably be a couple of weeks later. So in 3 weeks time, we could be seeing our first swallows arriving after…

    Odin’s Little Brother

Just 20m shorter than its big brother, the climb up Little Roseberry is just as draining on tired legs. Walkers on the Cleveland Way have to descend it and then climb back up as part of the extension up Odin’s Hill, Roseberry Topping. Open Space Web-Map builder Code

    Siberia

Greenhow Botton, often known as Midnight Corner. Felling has opened up new views. Not such a gloomy place. And somewhere in the cleared forest stood the temporary construction camp for the Ingleby Manor ironstone mine. It was named as Siberia and later reused for construction workers of the railway incline to Rosedale. Open Space Web-Map…

A view south from Roseberry towards Whorlton Hill with Beacon Hill and Near Moor behind. Early afternoon.

Just a sliver of a sunset. A bit disappointing and a reminder of the dark winter nights ahead. A view south west from Newton Moor. Open Space Web-Map builder Code

  • Roseberry Art

    Roseberry Art

A really good piece of work by Rachel Lonsdale, simple but effective. But I’m not convinced Roseberry needs it. I fear another step towards turning the National Park into a theme park. The idea is to discourage graffitists but with the artwork only on one side, there are three other blank canvasses. It is only a…

  • Tick magnets

    Tick magnets

There seems to be less sheep on the moors nowadays. Not sure if this is a deliberate policy.  Certainly, in other upland areas, there are concerns about over grazing. At one-time moorland farmers were actively encouraged to graze their sheep on the moors by gamekeepers. The sheep would act as magnets for ticks which also…
