Out & About …

… on the North York Moors, or wherever I happen to be.

Aireyholme

This made me smile. From the top of Roseberry. It could almost be described asĀ art but IĀ doubtĀ that is what the farmer at Aireyholme intended. A question for theĀ intellectuals amongst you: does there have to be intent to create a work of art?

The teardrop island and the squatĀ peninsular closest are where the ground is broken. They are at the limit of the ironstone mine workings of nearby Roseberry Mine. The ironstone seam was exploited by the bord and pillar method. After exhaustion the pillars were removed leaving the roof to collapse. Normally with tens of metre of rock above there is no impact on the surface but here the ironstone seam is so shallow it has given way in large patches.

Not sure about the art but there is an interesting study document about the mine carried out on behalf of the NYMNP. Here: http://www.northyorkmoors.org.uk/discover/archaeology/industrial-archaeology/roseberry-ironstone-mine/1094_Rpt_13-105_Roseberry-Phase-II-201113-final.pdf
