Out & About …

… on the North York Moors, or wherever I happen to be.

The Six Stoups

Inspired by the Tour de Yorkshire (see Friday’s post) I took the road bike out for spin. Fourth time this year, am I turning into a cyclist?

After climbing Birk Brow (which must be about the worst road surface in the North of England I spotted these stones on the freewheel down to Lockwood Beck. One had a plaque on it; my curiosity was twigged. I stopped to have a look:

The Six Stoups

These ancient way markers originally marked the safe route across the adjacent moorland

Restored by the Rotary Club of Guisborough and Great Ayton to celebrate the centenary of the Rotary International February 2005.

Researching the stoups back home it appears that only two of the stones are original. These have official Grade II listing. The others it seemed were old gate posts obtained from local farmers. There is also some doubt that they are in fact in their original position owing to the width of the A171.

So a bit disappointing. A word of warning if anyone fancies a look. The A171 is a fast road. There is no place to park and walking in is not recommended.

On the way home I cycled through two heavy showers. As a fair weather cyclist I’d forgotten how wet and cold it can get.
