A panorama unfolds from the Queen’s View, revealing the distant Grampian Mountains, with Lochnagar and Morven distinctly towering above the horizon.
Curiously, the information board at the viewpoint remains silent on whether Queen Victoria ever actually beheld this scene or remarked upon its beauty.
The view extends over the broad expanse of Cromar, a region steeped in history. Once part of the ancient Celtic province of Mar, its name, Cromar, whispers of its past. Derived from the Gaelic “Cro-Mharr,” it translates to “sheepfold of Mar,” an apt description for this valley embraced by low hills.
In the foreground lies the Howe of Cromar, formerly an unproductive marshland, now drained and fertile. One might wonder then, if Queen Vic did gaze upon this landscape, did she see the verdant fields we see today?
