From a distance across Loch Slapin, the Cuillin Ridge appears as the most extraordinary cluster of mountains in the nation, with a rock landscape of unmatched magnificence and astonishing proportions. Their immense size is overwhelming, both frightening and captivating to behold, as if they possess a magnetic pull on the eyes. This range encompasses every imaginable type of mountain shape, including towering spires, sharp peaks, rugged cliffs, sturdy supports, fragmented fortifications, and exposed rocky surfaces. The most fitting description for the Cuillin Ridge is undeniably “stupendous.”
I have fond memories of traversing the ridge in May 1996 alongside Andy, Barry, and Rob. It was a long day, starting from Glen Brittle before dawn and reaching the summit of the first peak, Gars-bheinn, amidst a flurry of snow. We arrived at the Sligachan Hotel well after nightfall. Those were truly great times.
