Out & About …

… on the North York Moors, or wherever I happen to be.

Different moor, different view

I’ve never been on this bit of Kildale Moor before. Never seen Capt. Cook’s Monument from this particular angle.

Usually I’m on my bike when I cross Brown Hill but today I was on foot so I was minded to leave the tarmac and head south until the view opened up.

But the sun broke through the clouds and I was taken by this patch of moor grass resplendent in its autumn colours.

But what plant is it? Purple Moor Grass? Flying Bent? Cottongrass? Help appreciated.

It’s growing on an old ‘swidden’, an area which has sometime been subjected to rotational burning where the young heather shoots are growing amongst the grey ‘gouldens‘, those old heather stems that survived the flames.

Lovely photo, as ever. My vote is for Purple Moor Grass.

Hmmm, not sure. I thought so too until I found this photo on http://beespoke.info/2013/10/29/purple-moor-grass/ which looks like terrain I have been very familiar with.
