Ashop Clough

Ashop Clough

A rather cloudy circuit of the Kinder Scout plateau with the clag briefly clearing on Fairbrook Naze to open up this view of Ashop Clough, a deep gorge down which the ancient path from Hayfield to the former Snake Inn passes1‘THE NEW ROAD OVER THE SCOUT’ (1896) Sheffield Independent, 20 Jun, 7, available: https://link-gale-com.ezproxy.is.ed.ac.uk/apps/doc/R3208774636/GDCS?u=ed_itw&sid=bookmark-GDCS&xid=91feeb39 [accessed 24 Sep 2021]..

The aim had been to visit the newly recognised highest point of the plateau, vaguely located by the description “45m NW of the 636m spot height”. Supposedly a cairn had been built on the spot but it proved very elusive. We found a couple of cairns but both looked as though they had been there a few years.

Once a black morass, the Scout is a lot greener than I remember. Recent work to reseed and blocking up the peat cloughs seem to be working.

Ashop Clough is on the 4 inns challenge walk route and I can recall being very pleased to reach the top of the climb from the Snake Inn
