Crown End, Westerdale

The rigg separating Westerdale and Baysdale is mapped as Crown Head. That’s it on the right, rising to 236 metres (774 feet) at its highest point. Baysdale is the nearer valley, Westerdale straight ahead.

Crown Head is best known as a site of pre-historic remains, representing activity between the Bronze Age and late Iron Age. There is a cross dyke and cairnfield containing over 100 cairns, including at least two burial mounds, a field system with hut circles, all thought to be Bronze Age. I had a look around the summit a couple of years ago. The height of the heather made it very difficult to decipher any of the features. Maybe it’s time for another visit.
