Bilsdale

On this day in 1933

“It was icy cold in Munich on New Year’s Day [1933]. Adolf Hitler was drinking coffee over breakfast at his luxurious apartment at 16 Prinzregentenplatz. The morning papers made gloomy reading about his political prospects in the coming year. A critical article in the social democratic newspaper VorwĂ€rts headlined ‘Hitler’s Rise and Fall’ suggested the Nazi Party’s electoral popularity had peaked in the July 1932 federal election.”1McDonough, Frank. “The Hitler Years”. “Head of Zeus Ltd”. ISBN (HB) 9781784975920

By the end of that month, Hitler had been named the Chancellor of Germany, and led a Cabinet of mostly conservatives who thought they could “tame” him.

On the 14th March, Hitler founded the ‘Reichsministerium fĂŒr VolksaufklĂ€rung und Propaganda’, the Reich Ministry of Public Enlightenment and Propaganda. Joseph Goebbels, one of Hitler’s most trusted associates, had been appointed to head the department the day before.

Goebbels was given the absolute control of all newspapers, radio programs, and movies as well as the theatre, art, and music. He set about integrating Nazi racism and ideas into the media.

Today’s photo is of Bilsdale looking towards Garfitt Gap. A fresh morning, still with patches of snow in the gullies. I hadn’t realised it at the time, but the bridleway follows the continuation of the Bronze Age boundary affectionally known as Billy’s Dyke2“Urra Moor Prehistoric Linear Boundary on the Western Edge of Urra Moor, Bilsdale Midcable – 1015955 | Historic England.” Historicengland.org.uk, 2012, historicengland.org.uk/listing/the-list/list-entry/1015955.
