I must be something of a thalassophile at heart because I do enjoy running along the coast, even though memories of being helplessly seasick are so vivid. But then a beach is also the worst place to run. Time never passes. The beach at Durridge Bay on the Northumberland coast is a 7 mile stretch of clean golden sand but I broke the monotony by climbing a few dunes every now and then. There is a risk of open-cast coal mining still looming over the bay. In 2016 plans were approved for a 900-acre open-coast mine which have since been rejected by the Government but apparently, a formal challenge is planned for the High Court.
