Out & About …

… on the North York Moors, or wherever I happen to be.

Whorlton Moor

A lone walker crosses a sunny Whorlton Moor and heads towards dark ominous clouds in the east. He is probably on one of the two long distance footpaths which use this stretch of the moors, the Cleveland Way or the Coast to Coast, the latter an unofficial but very popular walk starting at St Bees on the Cumbrian coast and finishing at Robin Hood’s Bay. Whorlton Moor is rich in archaeological featues often overlooked by walkers. Round barrows, cairnfields and field systems, all dating to the Bronze Age. About a kilometre back the walker would have passed an Iron Age promontory fort on Live Moor. The nab in the distance is Holey Moor End with the woods of Snotterdale on the right.
