Commondale

Most people associate Commondale with the small collection of houses centred around the Cleveland Inn at the bottom of Sand Hill Bank. But Commondale only really begins there and ends downstream at the confluence of Commondale Beck with the River Esk. A narrow, secluded dale, about 4km long. Cyclists using the bridleway between Foul Green and Castleton will probably not realise they are passing down Commondale. But the best way of seeing the dale is by train on the Esk Valley line. It is thought that the name Commondale derives from the Gaelic Irish personal name Colmán. This Celtic connection is not uncommon in Yorkshire, indicating a settlement by a man of Irish descent who had joined the Norse immigration.
