Out & About …

… on the North York Moors, or wherever I happen to be.

Aireyholme Lane

Aireyholme Farm from the south-eastern flank of Roseberry with the Cleveland Hills in the distance. The view is looking down Aireyholme Lane with the course of the old narrow-gauge tramway from the Roseberry Ironstone Mine to its left. Just before the tree, the tramway took a sharp right and headed across the fields to the incline down through Newton Wood to link with the North Eastern Railway. A bridge carried the lane over the tramway down which the loaded wagons rolled under gravity with the empty ones being hauled back up by a stationary steam engine located at the mine. So the surreal sight in the early 20th-century would have been a rake of nine wagons trundling across the fields, apparently under their own steam.
