“Beware the Ides of March” so said the soothsayer to Julius Caesar in Shakespeare’s play. A day in the Roman calendar corresponding to the 15 March when all debts must be settled. And of course the day Caesar was assassinated. But for me, a day for a leisurely stroll up Roseberry Topping.
Often erroneously referred to as a shooting box, the Roseberry summerhouse stands on the ironstone bed overshadowed of Roseberry but with super views over the Cleveland Plain. Probably built in the 18th-century as a folly to enhance the landscape. During the Napoleonic wars, it is though it was used to billet the local militia ready to light the beacon on the Topping in the event of an invasion.
