Ghost sign, Castleton

I am fascinated by the faint traces of advertising signage can occasionally be seen on old established buildings. This one was painted and is on a sandstone cottage on Church Street, Castleton as it climbs up to the village centre. Too faint now to be readable though. I don’t suppose the parish council would agree if similar was proposed nowadays.

I think this was the ‘Robin Hood’ pub in Castleton which closed in the early eighties.

I think there is another one of these at the top end of the village, where the Moorlands Hotel used to be

Ah, I’ll keep my eyes open next time I’m through.

Did you know that there was also a sign above the door of the Robin Hood and Little John pub in Castleton, which read.

    Kind Gentlemen and Yeomen good
Come in and sup with Robin Hood
If Robin Hood he be agone
Come in and sup with Little John

I have a copy of this sign in a book
