Out & About …

… on the North York Moors, or wherever I happen to be.

Well, there’s good news and there’s bad news

The good news is that it looks like the Traffic Regulation Order restricting off road motorbikes and vehicles from using the medieval trod that climbs Kirby Bank has finally been issued and is in force. The trod was part of a pannierway connecting Rievaulx Abbey in Bilsdale with the River Tees. Off road motorcycles have caused considerable damage to the route. This is excellent news for the protection of our heritage. The order was all set to be placed but at the eleventh hour the Trail Riders Fellowship lodged an appeal and threatening a judicial review. Hopefully the route can now recover.

The bad news is that there is now a road traffic sign at the top of the climb (and hopefully one at the bottom which is not so bad). Why, when the Traffic Regulation Order was drafted, wasn’t the rest of the byway through the intake fields to the tarmac at Beak Hills Farm not included? I am sure there won’t be many motorcyclists conscientious enough that, having approached this gate from the south, will turn around and go back.
