Out & About …

… on the North York Moors, or wherever I happen to be.

One man and his reluctant dog

From his origins in Germanic and Norse mythologies Odin has been a revered god associated with many things: wisdom, healing, death, royalty, the gallows, knowledge, battle, sorcery, poetry, frenzy, war. The list goes on to include the wind and it was certainly a wee bit windy on Odin’s hill today. How strong? I guessed a speed of 40 mph which according to dear old Sir Francis Beaufort was just a Gale Force 8: a mere ‘twigs breaking off trees, generally impeding progress’. The lone visitor on the summit with his reluctant French Bulldog was certainly struggling to make headway. But it could have been worse, it could have been a katrizper, an Orcadian word for a very strong gale; a word which literally means ‘cat’s-scratches’, how your skin would feel if flailed by the hail and rain.
