Kinder Downfall

The first time I saw the Kinder Downfall was by an approach from Edale on a wet winter’s day with a howling southwesterly wind. I was 14, trusting in a youth leader taking us across the notorious boy eating peat hags of Kinder Scout plateau. Somehow we made the Kinder Gates and followed the infant River Kinder to the downfall where it tumbles over the edge of the plateau. There the southwesterly wind was blowing the water back up the 100-foot fall drenching onlookers at the top.

Today the river was merely a trickle but the wind strong enough to spray it back. The peat hags bone dry making for easy running. But where have the omnivorous sheep gone? A rare breed hefted to the downfall by the generosity of generations of walkers eating their lunches. A loss of attention when you’re eating your sandwiches will provide an easy meal for a scavenging sheep.
