The Pudding Stone

And so summer ends.

Above the heavily scarred landscape of the Coppermines valley in Coniston is a small dry valley called the Boulder Valley on account of its numerous boulders, the largest of which is the Pudding Stone. A huge boulder that tumbled down millennia ago from the heights of Brim Fell. Some idea of the size can be gleaned from the footbridge over Low Water Beck. Its name derives from its shape resembling a dumpling that has been traditionally boiled in a cloth. Look closely and an old cast iron pipe can be seen heading down from a roofless building below the slate spoil tip of Saddle Stone Quarry. I believe this carried water from the tarn Low Water.
