Out & About …

… on the North York Moors, or wherever I happen to be.

One of The Three Sisters

A late evening view across to Easby Moor from above Turkey Nab. The 1857 Ordnance Survey map names this spring as The Three Sisters (one of). Her other two sisters are each 500m away to the north and south-east. This spring now flows into a covered concrete tank surrounded by a rickety fence but the sound of trickling water can be heard. The map shows a leat from the spring carrying the water into Otter Hills Beck. This leat is now dry but can just be discerned flowing diagonally across the hillside.

The monument to Capt. James Cook R.N. on Easby Moor can just be made out making a connection to the fact that it was on this day in 1770 that Cook controversially claimed eastern Australia for Great Britain, renaming it as New South Wales. He was under strict and secret orders to make such a claim but only if the land was uninhabited or if the native aboriginals gave their consent. Neither of these was true.
