Saltburn Sands

When Malcolm Campbell took his 350hp Sunbeam Grand Prix Blue Bird for a spin along Saltburn Sands on 17 June 1922 he reached 138.08 mph, a world land speed record at the time although this was not recognised as the timekeepers had used stopwatches instead of the electrical timing apparatus required by the official rules. The sands were a very popular venue for motor racing with regular events but by the late 1930s, it was beginning to lose favour. The barbed wire and invasion defences during World War II put paid to any racing and post-war a few low key local races continued into the 1950s. Campbell officially broke the land speed record in 1924 at 146.16 mph at Pendine Sands in Wales. A first of his many land and water records.
