Out & About …

… on the North York Moors, or wherever I happen to be.

Cold Moor

A view from Cringle Moor across to Cold Moor, one of the four bumps so obvious from the Cleveland plain. The footpath followed by the Cleveland Way and Coast to Coast long distance paths can be seen climbing to the 401m summit. The spoil heaps bottom left are 19th-century jet workings, the miners seeking the valued black gemstone formed from the fossilised remains of the Monkey Puzzle tree. They were generally small-scale family enterprises, the malefolk excavating drifts into the shale while the women and younger children picked over the spoil for the small pieces of the jet which were then sold to dealers for transportation to Whitby, the centre of jet jewellery production. Jet has been valued since Roman times.
