Also known as Heathwaite, names which are as Yorkshire as a name can be, the ‘thwaite’ element coming from the Old Scandinavian word for a clearing: thveit. Heathwaite means a high clearing and Huthwaite a hill clearing. This view over the buttercup meadows of Scugdale is a familiar sight for walkers on the Cleveland Way, Coast to Coast and Lyke Wake walks. Plenty of buttercups to see if you like butter. A flower held under your chin is a sure sign you do if there is a yellow reflection on your skin. Of course, you’ll need to be close to a friend to try this out so perhaps the lore is just an excuse for intimacy.
