Exit the tabular hills village of Gillamoor towards Hutton-le-Hole and the road suddenly turns left and starts a steep descent. Pause at the bend, the top of Pennab Bank, and take in a superb view of lower Farndale. Judging from old postcards of this view for sale on eBay, when John Keble, an Anglican clergyman, (1792-1866) wrote
“Thou, who hast given me eyes to see
And love this sight so fair.
Give me a heart to find out thee,
And read thee everywhere.”
I imagine there was a lot less tree cover. Indeed the trees on the wooded slope have fairly recently been pruned to maintain this view.
