Out & About …

… on the North York Moors, or wherever I happen to be.

Barleycove

On the 2nd November 1755 the Cork Journal reported that waves 15 feet high had crashed against the coastline. The waves must have been terrifying to the people. It is now known that the coast of southern Ireland had been hit by a tsunami resulting in an earthquake in Lisbon, Portugal the day before. One of the effects of the huge waves were to dump a vast load of sand in Barleycove on the Mizen pennisular creating the dunes we see today.
