Royal Observer Corps Monitoring Post

Situated between the old road through Nunthorpe and the modern A172 is a small patch of land that was until recently covered with an impenetrable thicket of thorns. The scrub has now been cleared revealing the entrance to a former Royal Observer Corps Monitoring Post which surprisingly has not been sealed. The post was one of 870 throughout the country built at the height of the Cold War to monitor the environmental conditions in the event of a nuclear attack. 12 feet underground is an 18ft x 10ft reinforced concrete bunker that would have been home for two men for three weeks relaying information to the regional headquarters in Durham. ROC posts at Chop Gate and Castleton have been preserved and are open periodically to the public. I am curious to know what is in store for this one.

Dear Sirs I live in Blackhill Keighley BD21 2TP and I’m interested in finding the location of the Blackhill Observatory Post in the 2nd World War. Is there any records of its location. Regards Robert Harness

Sorry Robert, I am not familiar with Keighley. Have you tried your local history society? You can usually find a contact in your local library.

However, I see that one of the links on the Wikipedia page I linked to above suggests there was a station on Black Hill Lane by the name of ROC Post Keighley at map reference SE03664237.

I guess this is the one you’re looking for.
