Little Langdale

At a mere 211m height Great How is a small pimple of a hill but with super views of Little Langdale which position at the junction of several packhorse routes from Ravenglass, Whitehaven, Keswick and Ambleside led to a busy valley. But, as well as farming and quarrying the slate in the hills, one particular dalesman was involved in less legitimate activities. Lancelot Slee, or Lanty as he was known by, was a notorious smuggler, and also had a reputation for his moonshine whiskey produced from several illicit stills dotted throughout the valley in secret caves and hidden quarries. The whiskey he took out by the packhorse routes, returning with smuggled tobacco and other goods. In 1853 he was fined £150 for illegal distillation but only after being informed on by a “business” partner. None of his stills was ever discovered.
