Out & About …

… on the North York Moors, or wherever I happen to be.

Tintwistle

Sunshine on Arnfield Low Moor, north of Tintwistle in Derbyshire. I must admit I hadn’t appreciated the county extended as far north as this. Obviously, the “moor” has been enclosed and improved over the years to produce lush pasture for sheep and cattle. In the distance the Dark Peak itself: Bleaklow. Apparently Tintwistle is pronounced “tinsl” and is derived from Old English/Welsh roots of Teign, the name for the local river, meaning Roarer (presumably an old name for the River Etherow) and twisla, a fork in a river or valley. I have no authority for this snippet of information other than it was on the back of a T-shirt in The Bulls Head in Tintwistle. So it must be right.
