Ayton Mines Memorial Bridge

During a brief break in the weather a chance to photograph a swollen River Leven below the Ayton Mines Memorial Bridge near Suggits. The footbridge was erected as a memorial to the five workers of Ayton Mines who lost their lives during the 1914-1918 war:

From the 4th Battalion, Alexandra Princess of Wales’s Own (Yorkshire) Regiment (the Green Howards):
Private Ernest Pearson 1893-1915
Private Robert Theobald 1888-1916
Private Arthur Wilkes 1893-1916
Private Charles Wildman 1893-1918
All lost their lives in France and Flanders

And from the 6th (Service) Battalion, Green Howards:
Private Lawrence Johnson (1888-1915) killed in action at the Battle of Scimitar Hill (Yusufçuk Tepe) in Gallipoli.
