Great Ayton’s Gents Urinal

Is this the smallest Grade II listed building? A cast iron Victorian gents’ urinal. Originally one of three in the village, this one was situated on Station Road and was relocated in Waterfall Park in 1998. It’s sealed up so it can’t be used.

Hi Mick, I’ve been trying to find the origin of the two stone posts in the photograph but can find any record of them. They appear very uniform with no discernible markings and are offset from each other with no holes for a gate support etc. I originally thought they were to do with the Mill Race but this ran through the edge of the field behind where the photograph was taken. I cant remember them being there when I was a kid but…. any thoughts?

Don’t know, Neil. Old maps do show a fence line there but no path. https://maps.nls.uk/view/100941968#zoom=6&lat=3223&lon=2375&layers=BT

Next time I go to the local history society I’ll ask around.
